I promised one of my favorite Tim Holtz Addict's, Juli Riedel, that I would share how I paint Tim Holtz's Wildflower Stems. It's taken me over 4 years, but I finally photographed a few wildflowers and added steps to the photos. Besides sharing on my Instagram at janice__woodard, I thought I would share here, too, for those who don't use Instagram.

I start out by die cutting Tim Holtz's Sizzix dies: Wildflowers, Wildflower Stems 1,2 and 3 and the new Vault Wildflowers. Then, I choose the watercolors I would like to use. This time, I used Renesans, Arteza, Prima Watercolor Confections and Kuritake Gansai Tambi. I just start painting and get lost in the process. I find painting these die cut flowers so therapeutic. I always paint two of each bloom alike and glue them together (off center) to add depth and texture. I bend the petals a bit, too, to try to make them look 3-D.

After they're painted, I add extra details such as thin lines of black on the pastel colored flowers and white on the more vibrant flowers. I use a black Pilot G-TEC-C4 and white Dr. Ph Martin's Bleed Proof White. I also add some "dew drops" with nuvo Crystal Drops.

I don't waste the paint that ends up on my craft mat! I spritz the leftover paint with water and place a clean sheet of watercolor paper in the "mess", then I use a brayer on the backside of the paper to help soak up the colors. After that, I pick up the paper and smoosh it and drag it through the colors, creating unusual backgrounds.

I hope this post helps those of you who have wanted to try creating a little more detailed Wildflowers from Tim Holtz's dies. If you have any questions, please ask, I'll try to help as much as possible!

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwTgKCebAb13WK6qyCyurVEDSO6L5ITKpH8FH2Uv26VQKbWD_pJWhgUZEoAS7dxsvaQNZ98iPx54KQzSHWvr_B2F7QH_pin99jPXXBCewtS-1LIjTDJHBWKISFtEFIDEpDcWqTALLx3iCmkmfZRYJ4-VXobn5anV7XC70Ut4Kl3fQkQOGiyezS50dejPUG/s2048/1wildflowers.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; I've had so much fun making different box tops and cards to go inside, but this one, by far, is my favorite. This one was so fun, I thought I'd share the graphics in case someone else wants to create one. Please note: This is not a step by step tutorial, it's just a share of the graphics and what I used to make my box and cards.

Several years ago, I found a booklet that was published in 1958 titled "The Voice of Firestone, Favorite Christmas Carols". I scanned the sheet music and shared it on Pinterest for other paper crafters to use if they'd like. Over the years, I've used the sheet music copies quite a bit but it dawned on me this year to use the sheet music for my tiny Curio Box cards! I used the scanned cover of the booklet and sheet music within, resized them and made my little gift card box. I also scanned the back cover of the booklet and used that on the back of my box. The scanned photos are shared here:

To create the gift card boxes, you'll need:

Sizzix Bigz Die - Curio Box

140 lb. For the boxes, Tim Holtz's Sizzix Curio Box die, cut with 140 lb. watercolor paper was used. one blog post. This post isn't about crafting with paper or fabric, it's
about my lovely, beautiful, sweet Mom and precious Dad. On Christmas Eve,
2009, I lost my Mother. The overwhelming loneliness I felt without her, led me to creating this blog. I used to share every creative endeavor with her
and she was a gracious listener. No matter how trivial my ideas, she met
them with enthusiasm, encouragement and love. Her encouraging words were the driving force behind my desire to create and her unconditional love helped complete me. After Mom passed, I turned to
Dad, and met a man I barely knew before. I knew my Dad was hard working, responsible, kind, funny
and was loved by his friends, but I didn't know much more than that. When
I called, prior to losing Mom, he would say a few words and then turn
the phone over to Mom. I freely shared my world with Mom and she shared
hers (and Dad's) with me. What I knew of my Dad, was mostly through the
eyes of my Mom. She dearly loved him and I learned why. Wrapped in a
riotous sense of humor was a man who was brimming with kindness, sincerity,
gentleness, integrity, intelligence and an unconditional love that fiercely
matched my Mother's. Earlier this month, Dad took up his place
by Mom's side. I'll never forget her saying of my Dad, as she was lying in her
hospital bed ... "there's my husband of 60
years, he will never leave my side". I can only imagine
the joyous reunion, and to be honest, it's the only thing that helps, as I wade
through the tides of grief. 💕

Hummingbirds Photo Above by Chris Jimenez Nature Photo on flickr

Photo by Janice Woodard taken at my parents cottage on the lake in Custer, MI

Wish You Were Here Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05025625078689812118noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285312821554901357.post-8118600637473654102019-07-31T23:32:00.001-07:002020-07-15T16:42:28.468-07:00A Christmas Card Tutorial

Time flies! It's been almost a year since the last time I visited my blog! I've been playing a lot more with paper and a lot less with fabric over the past year! I still plan to make bears, but it's been over a year since I finished my last bear...time to start a new one!

I was recently asked by a lady from the facebook group "Tim Holtz Addicts" if I could provide a tutorial for a Christmas card that I shared on the site. Tonight, I did my best (albeit lacks the professionalism of most tutorials), I'm hoping it helps the lady who asked!

The supplies I used were:
* Big Shot Die Cutting Machine
* 90 lb. watercolor paper for the flowers and leaves
* 140 lb. watercolor paper for the background and folded card base
* Tim Holtz Sizzix dies used: Seasonal Scroll (664216), Tattered Poinsettia (658261), Holiday Greens (658759) and Skeleton Leaves (663094)
* Recollections Clear Stamp and Die Set: Christmas Words
* Distress Oxide Sprays in various blues and greens
* Distress Spray Stain and Distress Mica Spray/Distress Oxides
* Distress Sprayer with water
* Distress Splatter Brush
* Fondant Steel Ball Tools (they can be purchased on eBay or Amazon)
* Mini Prills for the Stamens (they can be purchased on eBay or Amazon)
* Art Glitter Glue
* Glossy Accents
* Hot Glue
* Nuvo/Tonic Aqua Shimmer Glitter Pen Brush

Here is my photo tutorial ...
Where is this year going?! I decided to post today, after what I thought was a couple months, only to find that it has been 9 months since my last post! It does seem as I age, time flies a lot faster than it did in the past! This year brought a lot of new paper crafting projects and not so many bear making projects. I've been making a lot of paper flowers, first by inking or water coloring white mixed media paper and then die cutting and shaping. I've been making cards and canvases and enjoying the process. Here are a few of my latest "projects"! The first two photos show the white watercolor or mixed media paper after I've painted or stained it with ink, then after I have die cut into flowers and shapes. The other photos are my finished pieces!
It seems every year something happens to remind me that Mom is still with me. It is usually not a gentle reminder but a bold "look, Janice, I'm here with you"! As many of you know, Mom passed away on Christmas Eve in 2009. Each year, the reminders of her being close mean so much to me. Not a day goes by that I don't think about her but Christmas is always flooded with her memories. This year was no different.

On Christmas Eve Day, I was running last minute errands and texting a friend who sent some lovely Christmas gifts to me. I had just finished one of my errands and went to my car to travel on to the next. While sitting there, getting situated, I set my phone down. I snapped my seat belt, put on some new music and reached for my phone to put it back in my purse. As I looked down at the phone, in the text line it said "Mom". I did not text Mom's name, I did not say "Mom" for the microphone to pick up. There was absolutely no reason that the word "Mom" should have been in the text line, except that Mom was with me. I took a screenshot of the text because I wanted to save it as a reminder! I still tear up thinking about it. How she finds a way to make it clear that she's with me, I don't understand but I am so grateful.

I guess I don't need to say "Wish you Were Here, Mom" because she is here. She is always in my heart, always in my memory, and on Christmas Eve Day, somehow, she finds a way to let me know that she is indeed with me!

Have a blessed 2018!
Hugs,
Wish You Were Here Momhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05025625078689812118noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285312821554901357.post-84284510082044180992017-10-04T05:40:00.000-07:002017-10-04T05:40:11.006-07:00Mommy Hugs ...

There are times in this life when I could really use a "Mommy Hug" ... you know the kind of hug that covers you in a world of joy, peace, love and acceptance and at the same time reassures you that everything is going to be okay - today, tomorrow and always. The all encompassing "Mommy Hug". My Mom gave those hugs freely and they were worth their weight in gold! They made all that was wrong, right again.

I have problems accepting the hate and evil that have crept in to our world. Right now, the world is in a place that hurts and we all need "Mommy Hugs". We need more love to battle the hate. We need more good to battle the evil.

Please go out of your way to be kind to others. To give "Mommy Hugs" (they don't even have to be physical "Mommy Hugs") - a kind gesture, a smile, a friendly look. Something to reassure others that our world will be okay - today, tomorrow and always.

Peace,
I've spent quite a bit of time with my Dad over the past month. It's been such a joy but I've also felt great sorrow. We have been going through my Mom's "collections" and trying to decide what to keep, what to give away and what to throw away. Mom was an avid collector of many things, mostly fabric (she had enough fabric to make quilts for a century) but also lovely tea cups and saucers, little dolls, photos, greeting cards, etc. With the fabric, she made the most beautiful, award winning quilts I've ever seen. Designing and hand-quilting each one personally, stitch by tiny stitch, putting her heart in to each and every quilt (click here for a link to a slideshow I made a few years ago featuring some of her quilts).

My Mom was born in the first year of the Great Depression, she was a 1929 baby who grew up learning the value of hard work and saving for the things she wanted. She left Ohio when she was only 17 years old and moved to Detroit, Michigan. She found employment with Sander's Bakery and earned a living decorating cakes. Working hard but never losing the joy in her heart. I came across a little poem she had written and though I don't remember the exact words, I do remember the gist. It said to do your job well, even if you don't like what you're doing. Pretend you are a Princess while you are working and it will make you smile and the job won't be so bad! It sounded so much like her, always one to find the bright side! Everything she did, she did with a grateful, joyful heart.

As my Dad and I were working together, he brought me a little jar with some bags inside. He said "your mother saved these .50 cent pieces and I want you to have them". I gratefully took them, not because of the monetary value but because of the reminder of the life lessons she taught us children, the reminder all neatly wrapped up in those little bags. Each bag was handmade and had a little fabric tie around it with a rolled up paper stating how many half dollars were inside. I can just picture her putting these little bags of coins together with the intent of sharing them with her children one day.

A Great Depression Baby who worked hard, with joy in her heart, for everything she had. She taught her children to appreciate even the smallest of blessings. For that, I am forever grateful. I love spending time with you Dad, I'm sure your values, ethics and sense of humor are what kept you and Mom together for 60 years. Mom, I miss you with my whole heart. Wish you were here.
Making Dog Treats!

I've been experimenting making treats for our puppy and decided to share my latest treat recipe!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup peanut butter (pure - no sugar or added ingredients - peanuts only)
3/4 cup loose, leafy kale (optional)
1 peeled and cored apple
2 medium size bananas
1/3 cup blueberries
1 medium carrot
2 tbsp. water
3/4 cup of oat flour (more if needed for consistency)

* Please note:
I've read conflicting reviews on feeding kale to your dog. Some say it's difficult for them to digest. I've pureed the kale for these treats and am not feeding her the leafy greens. My dog doesn't have an issue with digesting kale. You may decide to leave the kale out of the recipe for your dog, though.
Directions:
Puree all of the ingredients except the flour. Place pureed ingredients in bowl and add flour. Mix thoroughly with a large spoon. When it's all mixed and is not gooey (add more flour if it's gooey), use your hands to make a ball. With a rolling pin, roll to about 1/4" thickness and cut with cookie cutters (I purchased dog treat cookie cutters on Amazon). Using a fork, make holes in the center of the bone shaped treats. Set oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place the cut treats on the parchment paper. Bake for 8 minutes on each side (total 16 minutes). After removing from oven, place in a dehydrator. I'm still playing with the timing and temperature on the dehydrator. The thinner treats were perfectly crisp after 2 hours at 125 degrees in the dehydrator. The thicker treats took about 2-1/2 hours at 125 degrees. Dehydrating after baking makes them crispier and will preserve them longer.

My taste tester, Luna, loves them ... I tried them, too, and they aren't too bad!

One of my crafty friends asked if I would show her how I make the flowers for my cards. I've shared other flower making tutorials here on my blog but this is a new way! I hope you will give these flowers a try, they are easy and turn out so pretty! If you don't have a Sizzix die cutting machine or any of the dies I've used (Floral Dies used for the flowers on my card), you can substitute hand cut flowers (there are templates on Pinterest here: Free Paper Flower Templates). If you don't have Susan's Garden Tool Set for shaping the flowers, you can purchase a Fondant Ball Tool set on ebay that works the same way. (After searching, I don't think Susan's Garden Tool Set is available anymore but there is a similar set on eBay: McGill Paper Blossom Tool Kit and here is the fondant set I use: 4-Pcs-Fondant-Cake-Flower-Metal-Ball Tool) Oftentimes, I paint 90 lb. watercolor paper and use that for my flowers but for this tutorial, I used Recollections reddish/pink and green cardstock. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
Well, at the beginning of December, I had so many things I wanted to share on my blog and for some reason, my blog disappeared! All I could find was an old cache snapshot when I did a google search. I was heartbroken because even though I don't update the blog often, I come back often to read past posts and I update when I really feel the need to share something that I used to share with my Mom. After sharing my dilemma on facebook, I received a lot of advice and finally was able to get my blog up and running again. I'm happy now! Since the beginning of December when I had so much to say, I have forgotten all those things. I made it through another Christmas without Mom. It still hurts, and the hurt does not subside. Everyone always says that it gets better with time, I'm not sure about others but this isn't true for me. Each and every hummingbird that flitters my way sends me in to memories of my Mom and even though I cherish those memories, I would love to have a real hug from her. I would love to hear her voice. I would love to share my joys and sorrows and listen to her joys and sorrows. I would love to love her in person rather than in memories. I look forward to the day when we will be reunited in eternity. Until that day, I will hang on to my lovely memories. Happy New Year! xoxo

So much has happened here in the past month! We adopted a precious little puppy who is a handful, to say the least! Luna was one of a litter of sweet puppies (and their Australian Shepherd Mom) who were turned over to a local rescue. Being part Australian Shepherd, she has an overabundance of energy and my every waking moment is spent trying to contain her excitement and rowdiness! We knew what we were getting in to (but forgot most of the fun stuff) because the only other dog we have ever had was a Shetland Sheepdog ... another herding breed that has way too much energy! Luna requires a lot of play time, a lot of time running and getting that energy out in a safe manner. Our house has some chew spots (doors and cupboards are her favorite ... wood must taste yummy) from the times when I haven't been able to divert her attention. She also finds a way to get in to the litter box (if I forget to shut the bathroom door ... argh! That's NOT fun!) She also jumps all over us and nips ... all things that herding breeds do and need to be stopped before they get out of hand. It's not too bad when a sweet little 13 pound puppy jumps on you and nips but what about when she's a 40 pound dog?! Yikes! Not a good scenario, at all! I'm trying to use the Victoria Stilwell Positively Training methods and Luna catches on quickly. She has sit and lie down mastered perfectly (unless she's excited, then it all goes out the window). Does anyone out there in blog land have some tips on training a puppy to stay down? She jumps all over us and the furniture out of sheer excitement. I also have not been able to introduce her to the two cats because they are too afraid. As it is now, they are out in the main part of the house at separate times. So, any advice on introducing a puppy to the resident cats is much appreciated, too! I do not believe in screaming, hitting, holding down or any of those other Dog Whisperer training methods. Only positive reinforcement ideas, please! Thanks so much! On a bear related note, I am trying to finish up an Autumn bear. She's a lovely pumpkin color. If I can contain Luna's enthusiasm, I should be able to finish before Winter arrives!
Hope you have a lovely weekend!
Hugs & Blessings,
One more paper crafting post before I promise another "Booh Bear" post! This latest wall hanging was made from a pre-cut, whitewashed, wooden plaque. I dyed several colors of 90 lb. watercolor paper using different mixes of Dylusions Inks. After the paper has dried, the flower cutting begins! I really enjoy flower making ... it borders on therapeutic for me! I guess that is how I end up spending hours upon hours making flowers! After die cutting the flowers, I tipped the petals in color box inks, dampened them slightly and curled the petals using fondant ball tools. I know there are some fancy flower making ball tools out there (with a fancy price to match) but you will get the same effect using fondant ball tools and they are a lot less expensive. The dies used on this piece were Sizzix Tattered Florals, Garden Greens, and Fancy Flourishes ... along with the butterfly die that came with the Sizzix Big Shot Plus Starter Kit. The smaller flowers were die cut using 5 different JoyCrafts! Florals dies. I hope you like my latest paper craft! Have a wonderful and safe 4th of July!
Hugs & Blessings,
Okay, last time when I went 4 months in between posts to my blog, I promised to show my latest creation here and I am keeping my word! My latest is a puppy who is made from long, beautiful, white mohair. She is made to resemble a Maltese. Her name is Gabriella - named after a friend of mine's sweet little Gabby, whom crossed the rainbow bridge way before her time. I am really trying to spend more time on bears and hopefully will be able to do that now more than ever. I miss working on these little fabric sculptures! They bring me so much joy! I hope they bring you joy in seeing them, too! Here is Gabriella's link if you are interested in visiting her auction today. She is only listed for one day! Gabriella on eBay Have a blessed weekend. I am a blog slacker. No doubt about it. I get worse all the time with lapses in posts. I've been super busy helping my husband with clerical type work as he has left his business career and has been consulting. He would like to get back in to the business world, so I've been helping him with resumes, as well. Each day brings a new and exciting adventure with him at home! lol! In the past four months, we've celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary (where does the time go?!) and I've celebrated my 10th year of being cancer free! Those are two milestones I am very proud of and grateful for. I do miss making my bears and hope to get back to them on a regular basis, soon. In the meantime, I have been creating paper art (it doesn't take long to put together a card or shadow box) and it allows me the creative outlet that I so desperately need to keep my sanity! Here are a few photos of what I've been up to in the past four months. Once there is a new bear or puppy or bunny to show, I promise I'll post it here first!
I had no idea this much time had passed since my last post! October 19th?! Time simply flies by way too fast. There really doesn't seem to be enough time to get all the projects done that are constantly dancing through my mind! My latest crafting includes the purchase of a Sizzix Big Shot Plus die cutting machine. I have a Big Shot and a Cricut Expression 2 but I wanted a Big Shot Plus as the opening is a full 9 inches! It makes all the difference when working with embossing folders! I started by making a little box and a card using the Starter kit (ordered with the Big Shot Plus). I think it turned out really cute! Then, I started making cards and I've made quite a few. I've attached a couple photos. The bears have been on hold while I've been playing with paper but I do have one that I started two weeks ago and she is almost done. My mind is full of bear making ideas, too. Wish there was more time in a day! I hope you are enjoying the end of Winter. Have a blessed week! Many hugs, Janice
We had the most wonderful time at the 30th Annual (though, now it is Bi-Annual) Quilt Show at the First United Methodist Church of Dearborn, Michigan this past weekend! My Sister, Brothers and I decided to donate Mom's Biblical Quilt to the church where Mom showed her quilts for so many years. It was bittersweet to let the quilt go but such an honor to know that there will be many who will be able to share in the joy that Mom's quilt brings. My friend, Allie (from Allie Oops Sweet Happy Life) wrote a wonderful blog entry (including many lovely photos) of the donation quilt and if you're interested, here is the link to Allie's blog post. Allie Oops Sweet Happy Life Blog Post about Mom's Biblical Quilt Oh, Mom's Quilt won Viewer's Choice Third Place! Such an honor to win this ribbon! I hope you will pop over and peek at Allie's blog post, too!
Have a blessed week.
Lots of hugs,
It's been several years since I've used loc-line in one of my creations and it's been a while since I've made a 14" bear, too! My latest little bear features both of these anomalies! Joufflu (meaning chubby in French) is made of a vintage Tissavel (from France) luxury faux fur coat. It's the prettiest color - pure white with black tips scattered throughout. I placed the pattern pieces in such a way that her face would be mostly white with a few black tips by her smile, above her nose and by her temples! Her loc-line neck gives her the cutest poses! For my teddy bear artist friends, you can find beautiful vintage Tissavel faux fur coats on eBay. They make the softest bears!
I hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
Hugs & Blessings,
Oh goodness, it's been way too long since I've posted to my blog! I've created a few new Booh Bears and Friends since the end of May and my last post! We've been on a couple getaways, one to Michigan and one to Colorado but I'm home for at least a couple months now! I have lots of ideas to start and hope to be posting more over the next couple months than I have in the past couple months! Have a wonderful day!
It took two weeks, but I finally finished my tiny little bear! Tiny Dancer is made of viscose and every stitch was hand sewn. She is one of the tiniest bears I've ever made (I think 2" was my tiniest) and once I began making her, I realized why I don't make them this small very often! They are so fiddly :o) But, I feel the finished wee girl was well worth all the fiddling. I hope you like her as much as I do. Tiny Dancer is on her way to Mississippi! I'm sure she will love it there!
I've been having so much fun making altered decanters that I thought I would share a sampling of some of the decanters I've painted and altered over the past few months. For those who are wondering if you can use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on glass ... yes, you can! Starting with a clean, dry decanter, (preferably one with a lot of texture) paint with one coat if you want the glass to show through for a shabby finish; use two coats if you want full coverage and stipple if you don't want any glass to show through at all. After the paint has dried, spray a matte finish over your piece to protect the paint. Next, use a coat of light wax and then a coat of dark wax on top. Using a soft cloth, wipe the dark wax from the raised portions of your glass and allow the wax to settle in the indented areas. For some of the decanters, I added a finish with either Jacquard Lumiere Powdered Pigment or Liquid Gilding. Some vintage rhinestone buttons, ribbons, millinery flowers, etc. were added for the final touches!
It was one of those dreams that when I woke up, I was confused and grief stricken - it was almost as if I had just learned that Mom was no longer here. In the dream, I was at my childhood home. Dad still lives in this home, so I am still there at least once or twice a year. In this dream, I was following Mom up the porch stair to the front door. Off to the side was a planter filled with beautiful geraniums, just the way Mom used to decorate the porch! Geraniums, little deer and bunny garden statues and some little "Hens and Chicks" plants. Along the front of the house runs a garden in bloom with Iris, tulips, daffodils and other beautiful flowers. So welcoming and lovely, just like her! We walked in and we sat together on the landing and I started to weep. I put my arms around her and told her that I miss her. Even though the house is the same, it is not the same at all. I love my Dad to bits but there is something about a Mother's love that knows no bounds. Mother's Day is coming up and though I know she is enjoying the gardens of Heaven, I sure wish she were here to tend to the garden at "home".
Once again, I've been neglecting my blog but I am back and I have a very sweet little guy to share with you! Dooley is made from a vintage Tissavel Faux Fur Coat - he is the color of a malted milk ball! Chocolate tips with a malted milk ball center! I've been playing with editing software today and decided to try the pencil feature on Dooley's photos! That was fun but I better get busy on my patterns. I promised to have my felt bird patterns in my etsy shop a couple weeks ago and I haven't even come close to finishing them! Wish there were more hours in a day! Here is Dooley in pencil and if you have a moment to peek in on the real Dooley photos, I know he would welcome your visit! Dooley's eBay Auction Link He will be on eBay until Wednesday.
