Good bye, Charlotte

If you would have told me 5 years ago that I would mourn the loss of a pet rat, I would have probably shuddered!  Well, in the past 5 years we have had and lost Jesse, Bella, Rattie, Wat, Adore and now Charlotte.  Most of our rats were rescues from  Any Rat Rescue in Arizona  and some of them were rescues from my daughter's friends but all of them were wonderful pets.  Rattie made me laugh so hard it hurt, she would run across the room jumping high in the air with each little piece of paper I scattered for her to pick up and take back to her cage.  Wat would run to the laundry room every time we took him out of his cage.  Jesse chased the cats and Charlotte was a constant companion here in the computer room.   Charlotte passed away this past weekend and I miss her little face peeking out of her cage.  I used to be repulsed by rats but after getting to know the many we have rescued over the past few years, I can tell you they each have a special personality just as your cat or dog does.  If you love animals, I would truly recommend adopting a pet rat from a local shelter.  They are so smart and sweet and everyone needs a little sweetness!   xoxo

  1. Sorry Jan, no rats for me. A big dog is all that I can handle.

  2. We are so sorry for your loss. Pets are such a huge and important part of a family - size doesn't matter.

Thank you for caring enough to rescue, we are true believers that rescuing is a two part love affair. Giving a pet a good home and that unconditional love they grace us with.

    We mourn your loss.

  7. I am so sorry about your little ones. I have currently 3 pet hamsters now at home. They have quite short life span between 2-3 years... it's really sad when they have gone to heaven.

  8. Thank you, Wayne. Rats can live over 5 years but our rescues were already a couple years old when we got them. I hope you enjoy your little hamsters for a long time to come. xoxo, Janice

  9. Oh I am sorry Janice. I have heard that rats are very intelligent and have wonderful personalities. It is so nice that Charlotte and all the others were rescued and got to live good lives.

  11. I'm so sorry... but not at all surprised you grieved the losses. Rats are much more intelligent than usually given credit for so they have distinct little personalities that can really endear them to us. One of my BFF's has a pet rat and he's quite a character. A fav fur baby I had as a Child was a Wild plain Gray Mouse that 'broke into' our domestic Mouse habitat and decided he wanted to become a domesticated pet! *LOL* He was far more interesting and lived longer than the domestic Mouse my parents had bought for us so he quickly became our fav and we really grieved the loss when he departed for Mouse Heaven.

  12. Thank you so much Joanne, Ece and Dawn for your kind words. Dawn, your story of the wild plain gray mouse that insisted on becoming a part of your family made me smile! No matter the size, these wee ones tend to touch our hearts!

  15. Oh Janice I'm so sorry you lost your Charlotte. I just love critters ...period! I had gerbils when I was a kid and I loved them dearly. I hope your sweet Charlotte passed away due to old age? I'm sure she had the nicest life any rat could ever wish for. I had no idea there even was a rat rescue. I'd love to have a pet rat!. (((HUGS))) Vanna
